How is the Academy doing - progress so far!

The Academy held its first formal board meeting last week and it was an opportunity to review the progress we have made. Overall the Academy wants to:


  • Lead and facilitate innovative workforce development
  • Commission, provide, facilitate, quality, affordable and local training
  • Develop initiatives to retain general practice staff


We have chosen to use the 'Three R's' to group our objectives - Recruit, Retrain and Retain. Below are a few slides that list our achievements to date:






As you can see from the slide we are massively ambitious in what we want to achieve. We are making good progress for some of our objectives but some of our objectives are very broad. We are in the process of SMARTing up some of our really broad objectives so that by the end of August we will be able to present a much clearer vision of what we are going to have achieved by the end of March 2018.

The latest quarterly survey of general practice staff in practices across Yorkshire and Humber was published last week. There were several themes from the data: The number of practices continues to reduce with mergers and consolidation of practices. In the last quarter the number of practices again reduced from 765 to 757 The affect of initiatives to encourage newly qualified nurses to have a career in general practice can be seen with 12% of GP nurses under 34 years of age The number of GPs under 34 has reduced from 23% to 20%. This might because newly qualified GPs are not taking up posts locally. It raises the interesting questions about where they actually are going? The report also shows the continued huge inter practice variation. Of 136 practices that commented about their risks and mitigation's only one practice said it had no workforce risks. Wakefield GP District TARGET - 25 April, 2018

The next Wakefield GP District TARGET event is on Wednesday 25th April, 2018 from 1.00 - 5.00 pm. There is food available from 12 noon. The title of the event is 'An Update' and we have organised a programme that we hope everyone will find absolutely fascinating. We have a couple of key note presentations, one on AF and Anticoagulation and other on 'The State of the CCG'. There are seven workshops about updates from Connexus, Pregablin Abuse, Palliative Care, Prescribing, New Obesity Pathways, Sepsis and CQC and Wakefield Healthy Hearts. We will be using Slido again so bring your smart phone or tablet. The event number to join is B179. Unfortunately Nadim won't be chairing but we do have a really great caption competition with a bottle of fizzy for winning caption. Where have all the GPs gone?

We have just had the latest GP Workforce Report for Q3, October to December 2017/18 from Health Education England. The report is compiled from data that practices submit to the GP Workforce tool.
