Practice Manager Training Programme for Wakefield

The Academy is planning to support a Leadership and Management programme for Practice Managers in Wakefield. The programme will be provided by Wakefield District Housing and is for the provision of an Institute of Leadership and Management (ILM) 5 award in Leadership and Management skills for Practice Managers.


Wakefield District Housing is an approved provider for the ILM Award and the plan is to deliver the ILM 5 Award to between 12 and 16 Practice Managers in Wakefield. The programme includes 34 Guided Learning Hours over five days, tutorial support, assignment marking and feedback.

The programme consists of two key units:

Unit 1: Understanding the Management Role to Improve Performance. Three days of consecutive workshops followed by a written assignment.

Unit 2: Assessing Your Own Leadership Capability and Performance. Two days of consecutive workshop following by a written assignment.

The learning outcomes for the units are:

Unit 1:
  • Understanding the specific roles of managers in enabling an organisation to achieve their goals
  • Understanding of how communication and interpersonal skills affect managerial performance in the workplace
  • Be able to assess personal development opportunities to improve own managerial performance

Unit 2:
  • Understand leadership styles within an organisation
  • Be able to review effectiveness of own leadership capability and performance in meeting organisational values and goals
  • Be able to adopt an effective leadership style to motivate employees to achieve organisational values and goals

The programme will be contextualised towards general practice and will give Practice Managers an opportunity to develop their management and leadership skills, reflect on their current role and network with other Practice Managers from Wakefield.

Is there a General Practice Workforce crisis in Wakefield?

GP numbers nationally are falling. Below is a chart of wte GPs in England: As you can see they peaked in 2013 and have fallen since. However, Wakefield is bucking the trend in that our numbers of clinical staff have increased over the last three years. Practices have submitted data to a workforce survey over the last three years and it shows increasing numbers of all staff in general practices in Wakefield. Indeed Wakefield has the most GPs, GP Nurses and administration staff of any CCG in West Yorkshire! The data from the workforce survey is tabulated below: Workload in General Practice continues to increase. Wakefield General Practice Training Events Calendar is live!

One of the roles for the Wakefield General Practice Workforce Development Academy is to facilitate education and training across Wakefield for all of the Wakefield General Practice workforce. We have set up a calendar of training events. It is publicly accessible on Google calendars, its not on Skyline so you don't need any passwords or logins to access it. It is a Google calendar so you could add it to your Google login if you wanted to, but you don't need to. At the moment we just have TARGET dates for the next 12 months. And by the way wasn't the GP TARGET at Pontefract great yesterday. We certainly had a full house, can you spot yourself in the picture!
