GPN Ready and Apprentice HCA schemes open for applications

Last week Primary Care First, our local Advanced Training Practice hub based at College Lane Surgery, Ackworth announced that funding for the 2017/18 GP Nurse Ready and Apprentice HCA schemes. These are great schemes that support practices to appoint newly registered nurses to become practice nurses and new apprentices to become HCAs. Across Wakefield previous GPN ready schemes are starting to have an impact on the GP nurse workforce with the number of nurses under 35 years of age nearly doubling in the last two years. The number has increase from 7 wte to 15 wte - so the scheme is making a difference. For the GPN Ready scheme there is £8,000 to support practices over two years. Practices receive £1,500 when a new nurse joins them and about £1,500 when the new nurse has a mentor qualification in year 2 of the scheme. The remaining £5,000 is held by Primary Care First of commission and provide training for the GPN in the first two years of their employment in general practice. For t...

Is there a General Practice Workforce crisis in Wakefield?

Image
GP numbers nationally are falling. Below is a chart of wte GPs in England: As you can see they peaked in 2013 and have fallen since. However, Wakefield is bucking the trend in that our numbers of clinical staff have increased over the last three years. Practices have submitted data to a workforce survey over the last three years and it shows increasing numbers of all staff in general practices in Wakefield. Indeed Wakefield has the most GPs, GP Nurses and administration staff of any CCG in West Yorkshire! The data from the workforce survey is tabulated below: Workload in General Practice continues to increase. Below is a chart of the number of consultations by doctors and nurses in practices in Wakefield that use SystmOne. As you can see the total number of consultations has increased over the last five years. The number of consultations by GP's has reduced and those by GP nurses has increased. This is particularly relevant to the question of whether we are in a wo...

Want a new nurse? Have you thought about the GP Nurse Ready Scheme?

The GP Nurse Ready Scheme is a scheme to provide financial supporting and practical help to practices who recruit a new graduate nurse into their practice. The scheme provides a package of formal academic learning and experiential supervision through the first two years of their employment. The first year support is mainly about learning the practical things new nurses need to learn to get up and running as a GP Nurse. The second year is about developing mentorship training. Health Education England Yorkshire and Humber has announced that funding for this years scheme will be similar to last years scheme. For details of last years scheme click here:  https://hee.nhs.uk/sites/default/files/documents/General%20Practice%20Nurse%20Ready%20Scheme%202016.pdf In order to access funding and support you need to contact the Wakefield Advanced Training Practice hub and contact details for this are below: Claire Broome, College Lane Practice Manager Claire.broome@wakefieldccg.nhs.uk 019...

What is a Nurse Associate?

Image
Wakefield is involved in the second wave of Nurse Associate Training. This is a new support role that will sit alongside existing healthcare support workers and fully-qualified registered nurses to deliver hands-on care for patients. The role will allow career progression and is a route to becoming a registered GP Nurse. Watch out for launch of website!

The Academy website is due to be launched in exactly four weeks time. We would have loved to have done it earlier but the website is such a good news story that we are not allowed, due to a purdah on good news stories during the election, to launch till after the general election on 8th June. The website is starting to look great. It will include general information about the Academy, Academy staff, information about careers in general practice, vacancies in general practice in Wakefield, information about the Advanced Training Practice hub and links to resources and our events calendar. The best bit so far is probably the videos - lots of willing (?) volunteers who tell their story about their training in Wakefield. The website is being hosted by the Connecting Care Website - to follow and view as soon as we are live - click here!

My role as a Nurse Leadership Fellow

As part of promoting nurses 'International Nurses Day' Last week the 12th May, I thought it was timely to give a brief description on my post that I feel very privileged to have secured, as a leadership fellow. The fellowship programme is part of the future Leaders Programme, which aims to Invest in leaders of the future. My post is part funded by Health Education England (HEE YH) and part by the CCG. This programme was initially aimed at Medics, but as of last year they opened it up to other disciplines such as  nurses, pharmacists, paramedics and other allied health professionals and practitioners. I was on the first programme that included nurses and I am seizing the opportunity to promote and champion nurses as leaders within healthcare.  Please click on the link below to access the future leaders programme for more information on the fellowship and indeed employing a fellow for any le...
