Wakefield Trainee Feedback

The results of the GMC National Training Survey has been published this week. To read the summary report click here. The report is following the annual questionnaire to 100,000 trainee doctors and their trainers in the UK. The complete data base is searchable and in the public domain, click here for the full data base. I have looked for any specific observations relevant to general practice. In the survey there were questions about workload intensity. Below is a graph of how trainers viewed the intensity of their work: And below is a similar chart of how trainee viewed the intensity of their work" There is a large difference between how trainees and trainers view the intensity of their work - 84.5% of GP trainers view their workload as heavy or very heavy compared to 36.6% of GP trainees. This is worthy of further exploration but might just be an indicator of why morale is low in general practice and why resilience is weak. It was also reflected in another gra...

Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship with the Open University

The Open University has just announced the development of Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeships. These apprenticeships will enable healthcare support workers (HCSWs) to train for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, as either adult or mental health nurses. Click here for more details from the Open University Who is it for? The programme is suitable for the development of  existing HCSWs  who have demonstrated the capabilities and commitment to develop towards registered nurse status. It offers an excellent progression route from relevant Level 3 apprenticeships and can also be used to support recruitment of new apprentices. The Registered Nurse Degree Apprenticeship also provides a suitable progression route for those wishing  to progress from Assistant Practitioner roles , as there are well developed credit transfer systems for assessing credit achieved by people who have undertaken the relevant foundation degrees or QCF / RQF qualificatio...

Wakefield General Practice Workforce Survey - latest results

Image
Submissions to the General Practice Workforce Survey toolkit was again 100% for practices in Wakefield at the end of Q2 2017/18. This compared to a response rate of 55% at the end of Q1. The improved performance is because the Academy Co-ordinator proactively contacted practices before the submission deadline to ensure that they had submitted data. The number of practices in Wakefield has fallen from 38 to 36 but the report still does not reflect further practice mergers that have taken place. Below is a summary of the latest data compared with the last reliable quarter data (Q4 16/17). This is a graph of workforce trends over the four years we have been collecting data for. Looking at the data at the end of Q2 17/18 compared with Q4 16/17: The number of wte GPs in Wakefield has reduced from 232 to 212 There is continued low risk from retirement of GPs The number of practice nurses has reduced from 152 to 137 There is continued high risk...

Wakefield District GP Target Evaluation and Answers!

Image
Wakefield District GPs attended a training afternoon at Pontefract Racecourse on Wednesday 18th October. The session was titled 'Meet Oscar'. OSCAR is a new referral support service that has been launched to help Wakefield GPs refer patients to the most appropriate service and 'Meet Oscar' sounded like a really snappy title to get GPs interested. But the main agenda for the day was about how Wakefield General Practices will need to change to meet the challenges of increasing workload, stretched financial resources and a GP workforce shortage. 200 Wakefield GPs attended and we had 50 completed evaluations. Attendees were asked to score presentations and workshops out of five. All of the presentations and workshop sessions scored more than three. We used slido to get attendees to ask questions of our speakers and below is an infographic of the main themes from questions attendees asked: We also asked for free text comments. The comments were very interesting and t...

TARGET - Meet Oscar! Certificate of attendance and reflective template

If you have attended the Wakefield District TARGET session on Wednesday 18th October and want to down load a certificate of attendance then click here.  For NHS appraisal purposes you don't need a certificate of attendance and your appraiser is more interested in your reflections about the training afternoon. What did you learn, how is it going to change your practice and what will you different in the future? To help you with these reflections I have added a short reflective template after the certificate of attendance.
